Lancashire is a county in North West England. The county town is Lancaster although the county’s administrative capital is the city of Preston.
From the unique and wildlife rich Morecambe Bay in the north to the flat and fertile coastal plains around Ormskirk and the Ribble Estuary; and from the world famous seaside town of Blackpool, in the west, to the undulating fells and moorland of the Forest of Bowland and Pennines in the east, Lancashire is a modern county with a rich history.
Historically, the county of Lancashire covered a much wider area before boundary changes were introduced in 1974. Some towns which formerly belonged to the county still strongly identify with it. Notable examples are Bolton, Wigan, Leigh, St. Helens, Southport, Bury, Horwich and Heywood as well as cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and Salford.
